10 Professional Habits You Need to Build in Your 20’s

Building good professional habits early on is the greatest advantage you can give yourself. From age 20-29, life can be difficult, unpredictable, and sometimes a rollercoaster. College, work, relationships, and finding who you truly are as an adult is what your twenties are all about. Creating habits that distinguish you as career-minded professional will not only help you out in your work life, but it will carry out into every aspect of your life which helps you garner respect from just about anyone. So, now it’s time to do some fine-tuning. Ready?

  1. Set your social media profiles on private. Employers stalk just like the rest of us. They want to know what you’re like outside of an interview and it’s important to make sure you have no evidence of being unworthy of the position.
  2. Build out your LinkedIn Profile. LinkedIn is a great way to network in the professional realm. Make sure you create your profile, start connecting with people you know, and ever people you don’t, but try to really niche majority of your connections to the industry you want to work in.
  3. Create a visually pleasing resume. The years of a simple word document and a nice cursive font as the heading is over. Canva has resume templates that are beautiful and help you stand out. (not sponsored, I just genuinely love Canva.) ALWAYS keep your resume tailored to the industry and job you are applying for.
  4. Always make sure you are on time to anything and everything in life. My professor in college always told us 15 minutes early means your on time. Getting somewhere right on time means you’re late.
  5. Preserve your network. Old classmates or professors, someone you networked with a year ago, an old boss, maintain those relationships because you never know when you may need their help or a contact they could put you in contact with.
  6. Get organized. Now. No one likes a sporadic and overwhelmed person. It’s anxiety inducing. Get organized, build out a system for yourself, and stick to it. The more organized you are, the more pleasing it is to be around you.
  7. Respond to emails as quickly as possible. Showing you are reliable, easy to communicate with, and you respect others’ time. If you can’t reply immediately, just confirm receipt of the email and make sure you flag it so you don’t forget to get back to that person.
  8. Dress the part,  and then better. Being well-dressed makes a huge difference in life. I’m good with my leggings and hoodies, but that won’t get me far. Dress up and show out.
  9. Under promise and over deliver. Always. What people hate the most is having their expectations let down. If you say you could/can/will/would/are capable of doing something, you just set your own expectation. It is far better for you to under promise and exceed all expectations. This goes for everything in life, don’t create a let down.
  10. If you’re not happy, leave. Do not stick around a job you don’t like. It doesn’t benefit anyone. You’re miserable, it shows in your work, your boss gets miserable, and then its like a big pile of crap.
